Dizi

Dizi

The dizi is a Chinese transverse flute, used to play Chinese folk music as well as in classical and opera ensembles. Dizi are typically made from bamboo although other types of wood are also sometimes used. Jade and stone are among other materials used, but mainly as showpieces and collectors' items due to their lack of resonance. One distinct feature of the dizi which sets it apart from most other Chinese wind instruments is the presence of a membrane-covered hole, which gives the dizi its unique buzzing, nasal quality.
