Khartal

Khartal

The khartal or kartal is an Indian percussion consisting of a pair of wooden blocks. Usually a player will hold one pair of khartal in each hand; the wooden blocks are not connected in any way, but are clapped together to produce complex rhythms. The instrument is played primarily in Rajasthan, where it is used to accompany both dance as well as vocal and instrumental folk music. As well as being an instrument used for accompaniment, the khartal is a solo instrument in its own right.
