The Saw U is a bowed instrument used in Thai music.
The sound resonator is made of coconut shell, with one side sliced off. The open portion is covered with stretched goat or calf skin. The neck, made of solid hardwood or ivory, is fixed into the coconut resonator. The sinstrument has only two strings, made of gut. The bow, made of wood or ivory, is inseparable from the instrument, its hairs passing between the two strings. The Saw U has been used as part of Thai instrumental ensembles since at least the eighteenth century.
