Piu Sarkhel - The Art of Khayal
The Asian Music Circuit is delighted to welcome acclaimed vocalist Piu Sarkhel for an evening that wil explore the beautiful art form of Khyal. Piu is in the UK for two special dates - 12th July at the Asian Music Circuit where she will be accompanied by the talented tabla player Manjit Singh Rasiya and Friday 4th July/7pm at The Arts Club in St. Ives, Cornwall where she will be accompanied by the wonderful Hanif Khan on tabla.
Smt. Piu Sarkhel is a brilliant artist in Hindustani classical vocal tradition of the Indore Gharana, established by the late Ustad. Amir Khan Saheb of Indore, M.P.
Born in 1965, Piu was trained in Khayal by her father Sri Kamal Bandopadhyay who was a disciple of Ustad Amir Khan Saheb for 21years.The great maestro used to stay at their family home in Kolkata during the latter part of his life. Piu therefore had the rare privilege to listen to and to sing for the maestro at her tender age and thus was deeply influenced by and imbibed his remarkable “gayaki”. Piu has a beautiful voice with a range of three octaves. Her measured and imaginative approach to raga development is reminiscent of the svar-vistar (meru khand) of Ustad Amir Khan. This is balanced by virtuosic command of “sargam” (solfa) and gamak in fast “taans” and control of tal.
She is an empanelled artist with the ICCR, New Delhi and has performed for the ASIAN MUSIC CIRCIUT (AMC) for the three consecutive years 2005, 2006 & 2009. She has also represented India performing for the cultural wings of the Indian High Commission and Embassies in London and Europe.
We recommend you book online to avoid disappointment and we hope you'll join us for what promises to be a wonderful evening.
