Sam Lee (top) & Nada Brahma Ensemble (below)

Join us for an exceptional acoustic evening of music by Sam Lee & Friends specialising in rare English Romany Gypsy and Traveller songs, arranged for Tabla, Koto, Strings, Sruti Box & Trumpet. Sam Lee, folk singer, promoter and animateur releases his debut album "ground Of Its Own" this month. The recording is a musical manifesto, reflecting the artistic journey Sam has taken so far and the less conventional route getting there. A naturally gifted voice, singing was new to him until his first encounter with folk song some 6 years ago. This discovery of a new world compelled him to abandon his work as a trained visual artist, teacher of wilderness survival and moonlighting as a burlesque dancer and embark on a journey into the old songs of the British Isles.

The group will be supported by the Nada Brahma Ensemble which comprises of three up-and-coming London based musicians; Camilo Tirado (tabla/percussion), Francesca Ter-Berg (cello/accordion/vocals) and Jonah Brody (koto/accordion/vocals). This ensemble will perform original compositions and improvisations within traditional frameworks. With backgrounds in different folkloric and classical traditions such as Klezmer, Indian classical and Balinese Gamalan, the trio combines flowing melodies, complex rhythmic structures and ethereal textures.

Sam Lee & Friends performed live on BBC Radio 3 on Tuesday 26th June. To listen click here (first performance is 10 minutes in and second performance is 58 minutes in).
