Outreach

The AMC devises and organises educational activities to take place in hospitals and detention centres.

We can provide music and dance workshops from Asia including India, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Japan, Indonesia and elsewhere. We also provide workshops relating to festivals like Diwali, Chinese New Year and others.

There are two strands to the AMC's outreach programme:

Music in Detention

Since 2008, the AMC has been working in partnership with Music in Detention to deliver workshops in all ten Immigration Removal Centres (IRCs) across the UK.

A pilot programme in 2005 took participatory music activities into four of the UK's IRCs. The results proved the life-affirming experience of group music-making crossed cultural and language barriers and had a massive impact in relieving the stress suffered by detainees. Following this pilot, Music in Detention was formed by a group of organisations and individuals. Today, it is a registered charity which works to give immigration detainees a voice through music, and to create channels of communication between them, immigration detention staff, local communities and the wider public.

The Asian Music Circuit works with dedicated UK-based musicians to deliver workshops in two IRCs (Harmondsworth and Yarl's Wood) on a monthly basis, and to several others around the country on a less regular basis throughout the year.

Music in Hospitals

The AMC has been working with the Chelsea and Westminster Health Charity to provide music which fosters a healing environment. Regular workshops take place in the hospital atrium and on wards.

We are always looking for new workshop leaders. Musicians and dancers specialising in Asian music are invited to contact matthew@amc.org.uk
